Preservation Initiatives

NLIHC works on the preservation of public and assisted housing through a range of initiatives.  These initiatives include:

  • Supporting and promoting policies that preserve and enhance the Section 8 project-based and other multi-family housing programs;
  • Supporting and promote policies that preserve severely distressed and non-severely distressed public housing stock through administrative and legislative vehicles; and
  • Working to ensure renewal of all vouchers in use.

Preservation Guide. Is a publication on federal housing and homelessness plans and tools for preserving affordable housing.

Preservation Catalog. NLIHC is working towards the goal of creating and maintaining a national catalog of subsidized housing units that would include the most current information available on all affordable units nationwide. The Preservation Catalog would develop an “early warning system” that would inform local and national action to preserve the nation’s affordable housing stock.

NLIHC is studying and has facilitated the development of local preservation catalogs in pursuit of developing this national tool. View further detail on the project including case studies, background and a timeline.
